I was hoping for new information, but I guess maybe it's just retro - just like the styles....

I read your article on Hooking Up, especially your advice to parents. What ever happened to abstinence? Do we believe our teens are animals that cannot control their sexual desires so they, if they feel they are "mature enough", should indulge in them?

Please read: Theology of the Body by Christopher West for us to truly understand the beauty of sexuality and then share that with your teens. We need to teach our teens to understand the dignity of the human person and not to use people as objects for pleasure.

The article on hooking up is informative, especially in defining terms. Much of the advice for parents seems solid, but my final impression was that parents are seen pretty much as bystanders while children explore their sexuality. Setting limits and rules shouldn't be a last option but a first line of defense in helping teens safely grow into mature sexual beings. Firm and reasonable rules along with open communication and love will help, not hinder, the process.
