Excellent article! However, I think that you are missing the main point which is that what overrides all of your suggestions is a sense of setting limits that are clear and have straightforward consequences. Psychologists separate parents into four types -- authoritarian, authoritative, indulgent and neglectful -- with authoritative being those parents who DO set limits but do so in consultation and discussion with their kids (not arbitrary or dogmatic) and do so in a warm, respectful, loving way. All of this is in my new book "Me, MySpace and I: Parenting the Net Generation" which stresses being a good authoritative parent in both a proactive (before problems) and reactive (after problems) manner. For more information please visit my website at www.csudh.edu/psych/lrosen.htm where there are studies I have done with thousands of teens and their parents.
