I am just going through this now with my twins—one wants to get into Harvard (and has applied there), the other could care less where he goes and is considering a year off. I think it will be really interesting to see how different there are after next year if they each get to fulfill their dreams.

I begged my parents to let me take a year off after high school—I really wasn’t ready for college and I was miserable there for most of my freshman year. So now that my teen has started looking at schools, I have held out the possibility that she might want to do something else first, like travel or volunteer, and she is considering that.
