By Logan Levkoff, Ph.D.

So What Does All This Actually Mean?

Third base may indeed be different today, but the questions and angst that surround sexuality are all too familiar. It’s important to recognize that although the world has changed, our experiences still have value today. As parents we should feel empowered because it proves how important we are in shaping our children’s sense of self and sense of sexuality, which is a natural and innate part of our identity. There is no better way to send your children into the world than to tell them that sexuality is something that they should embrace, protect, and enjoy.

I can’t give you the script for talking to your children about sex. It is impossible to create a universal how-to, as every child has different needs and every parent has different experiences, values, and skills. But I hope this book serves as a springboard to furthering sexuality education and communication in your homes. If I have said it once, I’ll say it again and again: Frequent and open communication is essential—and we are all capable of doing it. I know that with a little work, we can all raise the next generation of sexually healthy individuals. Sexuality is too important in our lives—and our overall health—to let the job of teaching our children be taken over by someone else.

I organize events for the Charlotte NC area in October for Let's Talk Month. The emphasis is on encouraging and equipping parents to talk to their kids about healthy sexuality. There are "teachable moments" all the time! How else do we expect kids to pick up the right attitudes and behaviors if we're not willing to be the primary educator for them? I look forward to reading this book!
