The long days of summer give families the chance to take some down time and relax. But it’s hard to forget that within just a few weeks, we’ll be out buying school supplies and thinking about what next year holds in store.

Getting back to school can offer challenges for families, no matter what age your kids are, so ParentingTeensOnline offers a primer for making a smooth transition between vacation and the new school year.

Starting a new year

Most schools have a summer reading list or some assignments to keep students in “homework mode” throughout the summer. Be sure you get the books early and, if possible, read them along with your child so you can discuss them.

If your children tend to like school and all that goes with it, you’re in luck. The idea of moving onto the next grade, getting new teachers and classes and starting extracurricular activities, usually sparks some conversation in the car or at the dinner table. Let your own interest in what they’re doing show.

I think that school is my son’s job. I don’t think he should work to earn money. I think that parents have to figure out their priorities and keep their kids buckling down on schoolwork – that’s enough for most of them.
