Learning Centers Pros and Cons

  • Centers such as Sylvan, Kumon, Huntington, and Score have offices all over the country.

  • They conduct a diagnostic test, which costs between $150 and $300, before they will accept a student into their program.

  • Based on the results of the test, they’ll lay out specific goals.

  • Appointments must be booked according to their schedule.

  • Rates can range from $45-$75/hr (not one-on-one tutoring, small group) and they ask for a 12-36 hour time commitment.

  • Some companies “guarantee” results, but the only real proof is a change in the student’s grades.

Whatever the situation of your student, they need to realize it’s a two-way street, meaning they have to agree to taking the extra help seriously. Experts say even the most reluctant student tends to be pleasantly surprised at the end result as they raise the bar on their success. Janice, Daniel and Ray’s mom, says she couldn’t be happier. Not only has the tutoring helped raise her boys’ grades but it’s also boosted their self-confidence.

My two kids tutor each other. Every day when they come home, my girl, 14, who’s good in math goes over that day’s math assignment with my son, 16, who’s good in English and vice versa. I think it’s been good for the two of them to work together like this –there seem to be fewer fights!
