BOOK EXCERPT:
Virtually Exposed

Me__MySpace_and_I__Parenting_the_Net_Generation_photo

by Larry R. Rosen, Ph.D.

Janice allowed me to read some of her blog entries and the comments from her friends, which was quite enlightening.

Thursday July 20, 2006

I am so bummed today . . . well, not just today. I’ve been this way for almost a month. School is so much these days. Lots of tests and I’m not doing so well. My mom will be so p-od if I got a D on my math test. Even if I do, I think I’ll still have a C still but I’ll be close to a D. The other classes are not much better. I feel like there’s not much left. What if I fail my classes? I’ll have to go to summer school and that’s a real downer. No wonder I’m feeling so blue.

Wow I never saw you so down. Why do you think your mom will be so pissed? Has she done that before? When you think about what she might do, what do you imagine?

Stop your whining. You just need to buckle down and study. Get off MySpace and get back to work!

Janny, I think you are acting a bit too soon about this. You still have 3 tests and you haven’t gotten your grades yet. Perhaps it won’t be as bad as you think. I remember other times when you thought you failed that you actually passed. Remember? Keep studying and you might do better than you think.

Unlike a personal, private diary, Janice put herself and her problems out in the open, for all to see. Granted, the comment from WHIRLee-Bird was not particularly helpful (or even kind), but the other comments were empathetic and gave Janice good counsel.

CarMeN2006’s comments mimicked that of a psychologist by providing advice on how Janice’s thought patterns were irrational or distorted. In seeking out help through blogging, Janice is not alone. As shown in a recent AOL study, nearly half of the surveyed bloggers consider it a form of therapy-- when they need psychological help, they either write in their own blog or read the blogs of other people who are dealing with similar issues.

Jennifer, thanks for reminding me of that! I remember thinking that I should note that in the book because you are right, it is quite a nice record to know when you felt a certain way and also how others reacted to you. I guess that could be the start of the next book!
