If this is considered a trend then some trends are a good thing! This is something that is not going away anytime soon. They say that kids are our future and the future is "going green" as much as people do not like hearing that catch phrase anymore. Actually people have been doing this forever, they just don't realize it. If you garage sale, or collect antiques, etc. then you ARE going green. That's re-using. It's an old concept. But if Teens feel they are part of a better solution for the future, that is wonderful thing to support. I agree with Patricia, make them feel empowered and motivated! That's our job, isn't it?

Paula this may be a trendy thing in your area; however, my sister started a project with her second grade students to recycle paper. Her husband volunteered to take it to the local recycling center which would pay per pound. He then met the price they raised in recycling. The first few years they raised enough for the entire second grade to have an ice cream or pizza party at the end of the year. A few years ago they purchased bookshelves for every classroom. Three years ago high school seniors were bring their paper "back" to Ms. Pennington's class to be recycled. The "trend" has lasted at least twelve years. (Do you really think the students are motivated by a pizza party twelve years ago?)

Wow, Paula! If you don't see the need or benefit of going green, you need to wake up. Kids are anxious about a lot of things and if they can make a positive impact they'll feel empowered and motivated to continue to make the earth better for all of us. It's not about being "trendy", it's about a lifestyle change. Please support them or at least don't disregard/disrespect their work!!

This is such a “trendy” thing, I’m sure a lot of high schools will get into it. But all the doom-sayers are really just making our kids anxious and probably more energy (and money!) is wasted changing all the lightbulbs than any actual resources saved.

Our teens have been recycling and composting for years, and have also committed to carpooling so they can use less gas and to not buying new “things” unless it’s absolutely essential. I am very proud of them – and they’ve actually opened my eyes to the kind of flagrant way we’ve been taking our world and planet for granted. I really hope it helps preserve a world for their great-great grandchildren.
