The Limewire software itself is legal--you are simply downloading a file-sharing system. However, downloading copyrighted songs on the system is illegal because the artists don't get a penny in royalties. If your kids want to share files of themselves singing or playing an instrument, that's great - or if they chose to download music that was written before 1950, that is legal because the copyrights on those songs have expired. But I'm guessing that the selections your kids want are current... and therefore, illegal.
