ParentingTeensOnline expert Kendrin Sonneville, M.S., R.D., L.D.N. answers the question, "What else can I do to improve my teens' eating habits?" Kendrin is a clinical dietician specialist at Childrens' Hospital Boston. She answers:

When a teen athlete is in season, he or she needs to be eating more calories and drinking more water than usual to make up for what the energy burned and the fluids lost during training. Otherwise, the dietary advice give to teen athlete is very similar to the eating habits recommended for all teens. Unfortunately, many teens seem to be able to “get by” with eating inconsistently or having unbalanced meals. A teen athlete’s body, however, may not be as forgiving. Having an unhealthy diet can impact athletic performance substantially. If your son has inconsistent eating habits, he should spend the summer getting those on track so he will be able to perform optimally during the season. Healthy habits to encourage are: 1) Eating snacks Snacks are especially important for teen athletes. The added energy will help them stay energized and alert throughout the day and can enhance performance at practice/games/competitions. 2) Drinking water Water is the best fluid source for most athletes, so getting in the habit of drinking water can help prevent dehydration during the season. 3) Having balanced meals Athletes need a balance of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to restore their bodies exercise and to prepare their muscles for the next day.
