Question:

I have a 14 year old daughter that has always loved school and gotten good grades. Lately, though, she has been saying she hates school and her grades have fallen. When asked why she hates it she just says she doesn't like the people. Any suggestions on an approach to this?

In many cases, when a 14-year-old student says they hate school, there are other reasons. I would first make an appointment and talk with the teachers, a coach, and guidance counselor. They see her every day and can sometimes pinpoint the exact reasons for falling grades. Secondly, see who her new friends are. Where she is going after school, and on weekends? Whose house is she hanging out in?  If she has a new circle of friends, that could be a prominent reason for her recent dislike of school. Peer pressure at that age is unbelievable. Perhaps the final area you should investigate is the use of alcohol/drugs. There are several products available to parents across the counter for you to test your teen. While we always want to believe our children, a simple test also eliminates any additional worry. If the test comes out positive, then you need to speak with a Substance Abuse Counselor, who will then guide you and your child.
