Question:
My daughter was getting an F in Spanish. I told her no Dance class until she got it up. She brought her grade up to a C. Yet, I feel she can do much better than that. Should I be content with the C or push her some more? When are you being too pushy with the grades? Thanks,
Amos

ParentingTeensOnline expert Dr. John Amato is principal of Maple Place Middle School in Oceanport, NJ. He answers:
Your daughter did what you both agreed upon in the beginning, which was to raise her grade. While it is always a good idea to encourage her to do better, you must allow her to attend dance class. Now that she achieved a grade of "C," you can move on from there and support her schoolwork and raise expectations. Perhaps a "C+" would be the next grade that is achievable...then a "B" would be in order. A parent might be too pushy if he required his daughter to get an "A" in all her subjects, even if he knows she has the ability. Understand that all students have different learning styles, and learn at a different pace. Continue to encourage her throughout her school years. That will make a difference!
