In discussions of errant teen behavior, it's extremely rare that the lack of parent oversight and basic socialization are mentioned as contributing to a variety of problems.
All negative social indicators, including elicit drug use, are over-represented in single parent situations.
SAVE THE ROTTEN TOMATOES, please, because I did NOT say that single parents predict deviancy. Of course there are many single parents who do a tremendous job of raising kids. Who, but a fool, though would suggest that the job of child rearing isn't easier when BOTH bio parents work for the benefit of the child, to watch, to supervise, to socialize, to correct, and to re-direct?
This article, very correctly points out the need for vigilance and oversight in this important area. I'm voting that more will be observation and teaching will be done when the children are living with their biological parents (and the child will be more likely to accept such teaching).

My son was arrested at school for trying to sell Tylenol #3 (with codeine). I filed theft charges on him also because he took the medicine from my medicine cabinet. He was offered money ($15) for some pills. I never would have dreamed that this would happen. A lot of kids at his school are also selling Adderall (for ADHD) and pain pills from home. He is on probation for 6 months and if he has no more problems before he is 18, his record will be sealed. Please parents, talk to your children about prescription drug use.

This is a great article. I wish I would have known about ParentingTeensOnline before my family's life was torn upside down from prescription and over the counter drugs. I pray more parents take this problem very serious. My son is now doing time in dept. of corrections for juveniles, if only I had known more of the signs. Thanks for the help now, so when he comes home I can be more prepared.

The article is fantastic. I think it accurately portrays drugs in my high school and teenage community. Other drugs, like LSD and mushrooms are more prevalent with older teens and are used in a much more dangerous way - while driving or at school. They are not hard to get, because there is at least one kind who has a mushroom farm at every high school.

The pharm parties are real, but only really happen with older more experienced drug users, and those who want to become more serious drug users. Alcohol is often there, and there is a lot of mixing of over the counter drugs, prescription drugs and street drugs.

The tips seem helpful. But I think what really needs to be addressed is parents who are letting there kids drink heavily or use drugs. Parents who look away, or try not to notice are a huge issue.

We added a street drug slang dictionary to the article resources. Also, the Erowid site, which is listed in the resources, provides common names for all types of drugs.

Well is there a list of SLANG to identify the prescribed medicine the kids are using today? I know about HUFFING for the glue and the paint but what else is there?

My wife recently had some surgery and was briefly on painkillers. When I read this article, I immediately went upstairs and flushed the remainder of the bottle. This is pretty terrifying, and I never heard about it before, but it doesn’t surprise me. I have two teen daughters, and the younger one is kind of a wild child who will try anything. I’m going sit her down and have a serious talk about drugs this week.

Thank You I did not know what they were calling the medicines in the cabinet now i can watch my teen as much as i can. Is there a list I can use for the slang of these drugs or any other drugs. Thanks :)
