Students Speak Out on Their Hopes and Dreams for the New School Year

KERRY, AGE 16, WA

When I think about it this year, I think I'm really gonna have to work my ass off. Normally, people take most classes as pass/fail their junior and senior year. But my last two years are gonna be serious work, so I'm not looking forward to it.

I keep asking myself, why did I screw off, and I'm not sure. I guess it was just no will power to actually do anything. Not going to class, not doing homework and stuff always seems like a better choice than actually doing it. So you kind of take the fun stuff instead of the work stuff.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but looking back, it probably wasn't. Did I say probably? I mean, I could have gotten away with it if I'd done the easy work when I was actually there. But I'd not do it or DO IT and not turn it in (which really wasn't a good idea.)

I'm not sure why it feels different now. Probably because if I don't get serious I'm not going to graduate on time, and I really don't want to be there an extra year or two. So I guess I'm going to take the next two years to actually do it. Then I won't have to deal with it anymore... with the homework and the bitchy teachers.

Why do those teachers teach? Because they get summers off? Because they aren't comfortable with the adult world? In their classroom, they're king... no one else can question them. If they do, they get kicked out. These people have power over us because the students can't get it in the real world.

But the bottom line is, I have to put up with that until I graduate, which is why I'm finally trying to graduate.
