What about breakfast together -- the meal doesn't necessarily have to be after five PM.

How do these families do it? My husband and I have long commutes to work; our son is home before us and generally puts a frozen dinner in the microwave. I think anyone who says they do family dinners all the time in this day and age is a liar! We always do at least one weekend meal together – and we enjoy it, but it doesn’t seem essential to me.

I think we must be the only family in town who eat breakfast and dinner together – but maybe that’s because my husband works right down the block and I’m a stay-at-home mom. There are times when our kids’ activities seem overwhelming, but then we just wait dinner and eat later, or do it early before the craziness starts. I had no idea that anyone did studies on this but it makes sense that the daily meal would influence kids and prevent them from taking risks. Our son and daughter have a chance to speak to us every day, and we have a chance to let them hear our opinions about the news, the family, and life in general. We would never do without these family meals!
